Spring is a season when gardeners may start feeling frantic!
Frost-free dates, whether or not to attempt seed starting, days to emergence & maturity, soil amendments, soil temperatures, seeds vs. starts, where to get seeds (or starts) and what kinds...the list goes on! And, there's the big question of garden organization - what to plant where, what to plant near what, what to rotate and what to leave in the same place season after season...whew!
If you're new to gardening, or new to gardening in Missoula, or just want to be sure you're starting off on the right foot at the beginning of the season, there are so many factors to take into consideration! The task can feel fairly overwhelming if you try to do it all at once!

On April 17, Sarah Bortis of Garden City Harvest (Orchard Homes farm manager) helped Missoulians get a handle on the spring garden prep frenzy. She began with a hands-on discussion of soil, soil tilling considerations, amendments and more. Workshop participants got their hands dirty, literally, working on a new bed in the MUD garden, and saw first hand the difference a few wheelbarrow loads of compost can make!

Then, we transitioned to talking about garden planning, and timing of the growing season in Missoula (which is distinctly different from that of one participant's previous experience in central California!). We concluded with discussion about growing from seed vs. transplants, what kind of plants should be grown from starts to maximize potential in the short Montana growing season and which are quick or cold-tolerant enough to be grown from seed. Participants sorted through MUD's seed stash, and went home with seeds started for their own gardens.
