"Gardening sounds nice, but I don't have time for naps, weeding, play dates, weeds, laundry, snack time, and story hour..."
Have you ever thought that? Then this class was for you! April 6th, MUD Program Director and master gardener Bethann Garramon showed how parents can integrate successful gardening into busy lives.
We took a "hands-on" approach to gardening, covering topics such as what is easy to grow and cost effective, and how to make even a small garden worth your time. We talked about garden planning, with hand-outs based on the fruits vegetables your family likes to eat, those that are low-maintenance, and those that produce well. We even discussed which produce isn't worththe trouble - high maintenance, requires lots of space, or is just really easy and affordable to purchase in large quantities at the Farmers' Markets.
We answered dozens of questions about timing, what does and does not grow well in Missoula, specifics about past garden problems like poor production, pets in the garden, etc. We also addressed involving children in your garden.Dirty knees, soil in a kid's hair, and "their" carrots can be the start of positive, healthy life-long habits. Gardening is a learning process, and a lot of it happens on your hands and knees, no matter what your age.
If you are interested in gardening as a family, we encourage you to pre-register for our upcoming workshop onCultivating Family in Your Home Garden,a workshop offered in collaboration with the Missoula Children's Museum. The focus will be techniques and activities for involving your kids, and children are welcome (accompanied by an adult). Follow this link for more information:Family Gardening workshop.
